“Lead the ‘calf’ to water”

Providing fresh, clean water to livestock at all times is essential for your calf’s health, growth and performance. Water plays a key role in digestion, temperature regulation and overall well-being. Upon arrival, your calf may not instinctively locate the water source, so it’s important to guide them directly to it. Doing so ensures they begin hydrating immediately, which helps reduce stress and supports a smooth adjustment to their new environment.

Consult with previous breeder/seller

Before making any changes to your calf’s feeding program, it’s a good idea to have a conversation with the breeder or seller to understand what your calf was being fed. This includes the type and amount of feed, forage type, feeding schedule and any supplements/additives being used. Once you have a good understanding of the existing program, gradually transition them over to your preferred feed, making sure to monitor your calf closely for any signs of discomfort, appetite changes or digestive issues.

Administer an oral dewormer and establish a schedule

Within the first 48 hours of your project’s arrival, administer an oral dewormer to help eliminate internal parasites that may have been picked up during transport or were already present. This gut “reset” allows the digestive system to function efficiently, which is essential for proper nutrient absorption and immune system support. It is important to keep up with regularly deworming your animal and establishing a schedule.

PRO TIP: Set your deworming day as the first of every month so that it is easy to remember and stay on top of.

Provide them with a stress tub

EnergiLass Rumen Booster Plus is a protein, mineral and vitamin supplement formulated specifically for stressed cattle. It is designed to help support feed intake and gut health, mitigate the effects of stress and keep calves on feed so they can perform to their full potential. Feed EnergiLass Rumen Booster Plus for the first few weeks after arrival, during stressful periods or throughout the entire show season for digestive support.

Incorporate a gut health product
