Effect of NutriVantage® and/or Chromax in Grow-Finish Pigs

|

Developing products and feed programs to help producers raise pork more efficiently to feed a growing population is an ongoing effort at the Kent Research Farm. NutriVantage® Nutrition Optimizer® for swine is a research-driven feed supplement developed to help animals achieve optimum nutrition from their diet. Our exclusive NutriVantage formula is made with nutritional components that consist of a blend of organic macromolecules, trace minerals, antioxidants and chelating agents. This blend of ingredients may provide immune system support as well as aiding in nutrient availability. Another ingredient that helps with the uptake of glucose for supporting energy production for growth and immunity is chromium. Chromax® brand chromium tripicolinate is a scientifically researched source of organic, highly bioavailable chromium that is used with sows to help with pigs born alive and number weaned. In addition, it can reduce fat thickness and improve loin muscle area when fed throughout the growing and finishing periods.

Supplemental Chromium Sources in Grown-Finish Pigs

|

Developing products and feed programs, to help producers raise pork more efficiently, is an ongoing effort at the Kent Research Farm. Chromium is a trace mineral that helps with the cellular uptake of glucose, which provides energy that supports growth and immunity. In addition, this added energy can be especially helpful during the summer months during heat stress events. Chromax ® brand chromium tripicolinate is a scientifically researched source of organic, highly bioavailable chromium fed to sows to help improve the number of pigs born alive and number weaned, as well as having a positive effect on carcass leanness. Another source of chromium used in the industry is chromium proprionate, which has also been researched extensively in sows and grow-finish pigs. In general, added chromium sources can result in small improvements in gain and/or feed efficiency in grow-finish pigs.

Benefits of Specific Enzymes in Home Fresh Poultry Products

In 2012, we improved our poultry programs by adding in a specific mixture of enzymes which resulted in a significant improvement in feed efficiency with broilers at the Kent Research Farm (see chart below). These enzymes, which are stable in pelleted feed, include a xylanase which breaks down fiber components to improve nutrient digestibility, an amylase which results in improved energy digestibility from starch and a protease which breaks down storage proteins which improves amino acid digestibility.
